Here are the opening and closing dates for Springfield-area farmers' markets.
- Saturday, May 9: Jacksonville Farmers Market opens. I haven't been to this one, but it's open every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 7am-noon, at the Lincoln Square Shopping Center (901 W. Morton Ave) in Jacksonville. One nice feature of their web site is a chart showing when to expect various crops. Nice!
- Thursday, May 14: Illinois Products Farmers' Market opens. Last year was the first year for this "evening" market, held every Thursday, 4-7pm, in the Commodities Pavilion of the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
- Saturday, May 16: Old Capitol Farmers' Market preview day
- Wednesday, May 20: Old Capitol Farmers' Market opens. This is the 10th year for this market, which is held every Wednesday and Saturday, 8am-12:30pm, on Adams Street between Third and Fifth Streets.
- Thursday, Aug. 13 and 20: No Illinois Products Farmers' Market, due to the Illinois State Fair.
- Thursday, Oct. 22: Last day of the Illinois Products Farmers' Market.
- Saturday, Oct. 31: Last day of the Old Capitol Farmers' Market. *sob*
Of course, in addition to the farmers' markets, there will be numerous roadside stands springing up all over, so I'll keep a lookout. For one thing, Seaney's opened a stand near Sherman last year, which I never had a chance to visit. When I go to the James Family Farm for eggs, I will definitely pop in to take a look!
The State Journal-Register has an article with additional information about the farmers' markets.
